What led to building Growth Loop Grader?

I'm in my vibecoding era and I think every marketer should too.

Over 80% of crypto projects need a leaderboard, KOLs and point system to survive one week.

Don’t we see that’s a problem?

Web3 products lack growth loops, and that’s why bull or bear markets dictate growth metrics. A great product should have built-in loops that naturally trigger growth and retention.

Rather, what we have are shiny gimmicks to trigger dopamine hits and move on. These metrics cannot bring the next billion users into crypto, it will only keep deterring them.

One statement you’ll constantly read in this newsletter is : No amount of marketing can save a bad product.

Login streaks don’t matter if you’re building something users actually find useful. The dopamine rush from streaks and point systems is just emotional manipulation in disguise.

Nobody uses X for streaks. Nobody checks their email for daily rewards. Nobody opens their bank app for a login bonus. It. Simply. Just. Works.

That’s why I built an app to help you check if your product has a growth loop or just growth hype.

Before you check your growth loop score

Let me refresh your mind on what growth loops actually are.

Most crypto projects witness sudden spikes driven by KOL campaigns or airdrops. What should be called hype is now seen as growth.

Once the incentives and KOL campaigns stop, does usage also stop? That’s the real test.

A growth loop is when your product’s core usage naturally creates more users – not through paid ads or shilling but through the product itself.

To better understand, this is what a growth loop looks like:

In practice, growth loops look like this

Take a look at Dune for instance. Without daily streaks or points, yet over 1 million people including institutions trust Dune to analyse and make sense of onchain data.

What does the growth loop look like? One thing that’s consistent on any chart created from Dune is the watermark inscription of the logo on the chart. Each chart acts like a billboard that introduces Dune to anyone coming across the platform for the first time.

Dune’s growth loop:

  1. User creates chart → Chart gets screenshotted/shared (with Dune logo ) → New users discover Dune → New users create charts → Repeat

  1. Users build dashboards → Dashboards get shared publicly → Viewers click through → New users start building → More dashboards get shared → Repeat

Dune’s logo inscribed on charts is a growth loop strategy.

Another example is Pudgy Penguins. Many NFT projects are dead today because they didn’t include a growth loop to make their IP relevant. Pudgy’s growth loop is simple : they're deliberate about their IP proliferation via GIFs, toys, merch, mobile games and many more.

Pudgy’s growth loop looks like this :

Pudgy Penguin NFTs→ IP proliferation through toys, mobile games and other avenues → Buyers scan code to get onboarded to the blockchain → New users join → Demand rises→ More proliferations = A bigger Pudgy Penguins brand

First version of Pudgy Penguin toys. They are not just toys, they have unique codes to onboard the buyers to the blockchain without them knowing.

Growth HYPE is

  • When people join for airdrops and not because they want to use the product.

  • Splashing thousands of dollars on KOLs to help you trend on CT or CoinMarketCap.

  • Locking access behind whale-only token gates and calling such exclusivity a growth strategy.

  • Running leaderboards and points campaigns that reward activity but don’t strengthen the product itself.

  • Running retweet campaigns that stage numbers but bring in zero traction.

Growth hype depends heavily on external signals like token price, KOLs, leaderboards, or one-time incentives, while a growth loop ties back to the product and how users derive value from it.

The Growth Loop Grader app

Because growth is widely misunderstood in Web3 marketing, I built a simple app to make it clear. Web3talez is all about making Web3 marketing simple, and I’ll cross any ocean to make that happen for you 

How to use:

  • Click on “Grade My Growth Loop”

  • It will take you to the first question which is the only optional question.

  • You can decide to skip and then proceed with the other questions.

  • Your product is graded on a scale from A-F (excluding E)

Grade A - Growth goals

Grade B - Almost there

Grade C - Growth loop detected

Grade D - KOL dependent

Grade F - KOL addict

Web3 marketing is boring BUT NOT HERE!
